Russian forces launched a series of strikes onZaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, killing a 69-year-old woman and injuring many others Tuesday, April 22, local officials reported.
In Zaporizhzhia, local officials confirmed that a high-rise residential building was struck just before noon, likely by Russian glide bombs, and that emergency services were at the scene.

The aftermath of the Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia / Videos: Regional military administration
The head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov, reported on Telegram that the attack sparked a fire in one of the city’s districts.

Fedorov confirmed that a 69-year-old woman had died. “Doctors tried to resuscitate her, but were unable to save her,” he wrote.
He said that 22 people were injured.
Later, Fedorov reported that the number of victims from the Russian attack had increased to 26.
“12 victims from the enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia remain in hospitals...The condition of four of them – men aged 37 and 67, and women aged 57 and 67 – is serious,” he wrote on Telegram.
The others are in moderate condition, according to doctors. Four injured children also remain under medical supervision and are receiving assistance.

“The United States is serious about facilitating an end to this senseless war,” StateDepartment Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a readout of Rubio’s call with the Russian foreign minister.
“Four children were wounded in the Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia. Boys aged 16, 14, 4, and 3 are currently hospitalized. Doctors assess their condition as moderate, and they are receiving all necessary care,” he added.
Kharkiv
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhovreported via Telegram at 1:36 p.m. that an estimated 12 drones had struck his city, sparking fires at several impact sites.
The head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration (OVA), Oleh Synehubov, reported on Telegram at 2 p.m. that seven people were injured.

“Between [12:55 p.m.] and [1:36 p.m.], a massive strike by Shahed drones targeted four districts of Kharkiv: Shevchenkivskyi, Saltivskyi, Kyivskyi, and Novobavarskyi,” he wrote.
Emergency services were working at both the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia strike sites at the time of publication.
Terekhov later clarified that the city had been attacked by 13 Russian UAVs, and the number of those injured had risen to 10.

President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the Russian attacks on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia via Telegram, sharing a photo of the aftermath.
“Rescue work is currently underway in Kharkiv after a strike by Russian drones,” Zelensky said. “A cynical strike. There were fires in several areas of the city.”
He also condemned the strike on Zaporizhzhia as “cruel.”
“Air bombs. Ordinary houses were damaged. Unfortunately, one civilian woman died. My condolences to her family and friends. More than 20 people were injured in this strike alone, including four children,” he added.
Zelensky noted that Russian drones had also struck Odesa overnight. During the day, there were additional attacks on Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and other southern regions of Ukraine.

“All this is absolutely deliberate Russian terror,” he said. “It can be stopped by a single order – an order in Russia, to the Russian army. Easter proved this, when there were no air alerts in Ukraine.”

He reiterated Ukraine’s offer to extend the truce beyond Easter and ensure protection for civilian targets.
“Our proposal for a ceasefire regarding civilian objects remains in force,” Zelensky added. “What’s needed is serious readiness from Russia to engage in dialogue. There are no obstacles on the Ukrainian side – and there will be none.”
