A shocking development is unfolding in Madagascar, as the country's president, Andry Rajoelina, has confirmed an attempted coup. This comes amidst a backdrop of three weeks of intense unrest, with protests led by a group calling themselves 'Gen Z Madagascar'.
The situation in Madagascar has escalated rapidly. Protests, sparked by issues ranging from service failures to alleged government corruption, have left at least 22 people dead and many more injured, according to the United Nations. However, the government disputes these figures.
In a statement, President Rajoelina's office described the attempt to seize power as an "extreme gravity" situation, urging the nation and international community to unite in defense of constitutional order and national sovereignty.
But here's where it gets controversial: the statement didn't name the coup plotters, but members of the elite CAPSAT military unit joined the youth-led protests, calling for Rajoelina's resignation. Col. Michael Randrianirina, addressing protesters from an armored vehicle, even questioned whether this was a coup, adding to the uncertainty.
Madagascar, a large island nation with a population of 31 million, has a history of coups since its independence from France in 1960. Rajoelina himself came to power through a military-backed coup in 2009, and his leadership has been marked by opposition and protests.
The Gen Z protesters, inspired by similar movements in Nepal and Sri Lanka, have utilized social media and crowdfunding to organize and gain support. They've brought attention to a range of issues, from poverty and the cost of living to access to education and alleged corruption within the government.
And this is the part most people miss: civic groups and trade unions have joined the protests, leading to the enforcement of nighttime curfews in major cities. Rajoelina's attempts to appease protesters by firing his government, including the prime minister, have not stopped the demonstrations.
